Fifteen minutes passed and a patrol car pulled into the driveway. Rose and Josh stood up, and Rose went to the front door to greet the officers. The two officers, a thin 5’6” blonde woman, and a tall slender blonde man walked up the steps and introduced themselves.
“Hello, I’m officer Janet Dunn and this is officer Patrick Porter.”
“Hi, please come in. I’m Rose Connor and this is my friend Josh,”
The two officers followed Rose into the living room and asked her how long she has lived in the house. She told them it’s been almost four months now. But she also told them that before she moved in, it’s been seven years since she was here last.
“Now, you told the 911 operator that you found a body in your basement?” Officer Dunn asked.
“Yes, I’ll show you,” Rose turned.
“Just one moment. What made you start digging in your basement?” Officer Dunn asked.
“Well, I don’t want to sound crazy, but there have been some ghostly instances happening here. And I also had a dream of my grandma and uncle Ralph fighting,” Rose said.
“So what led you to dig in the basement?” Officer Dunn asked again.
“I think my uncle Ralph told me where to dig by knocking over the bookcase in the basement,” Rose said.
Officers Porter and Dunn looked at Rose and then at each other. Without making it seem any stranger officer Porter asked to be taken to the basement. Josh stood aside while Rose and the officers walked to the kitchen. Rose took them downstairs into the basement. One by one they followed her to the area where Josh and Rose uncovered the jean-covered legs.
Officer Porter knelt by the hole, and with his pen and lifted the bottom of the pant leg. They saw a shin bone that continued upward.
“Yeah, we have a body here,” officer Porter stood up.
“Okay, can you call the sheriff and tell him what we found?” Officer Dunn asked him.
Officer Porter ran up the basement steps and walked out the back door. He got on his cell phone and called sheriff Miller. Officer Dunn glanced around down in the basement and proceeded up the steps. Rose followed her up into the kitchen.
“Would you like something to drink?” Rose asked.
“No, thank you… So you have been having dreams of your grandma and uncle?” Officer Dunn asked.
“No, just one dream. And it was like bits and pieces, like scenes of a movie put together. And the last part of it was grandma in the basement with a shovel,” Rose followed officer Dunn into the living room.
“Oh I see, and that led you to think that your uncle Ralph might be buried down there?” Officer Dunn looked at Rose.
“Yes,” Rose’s eyes started to tear up again.
Josh saw that and walked over to her and put his arm around her.
“What is your part in all this?” Officer Dunn asked Josh.
“Oh, I just helped her dig up the floor today. I do odd jobs around here for her,” Josh looked at officer Dunn.
“How long have you two known each other?” Officer Dunn asked.
“Only for the time that I have lived here… He stopped by one day to offer his handyman services,” Rose said.
“Oh, okay,” officer Dunn looked at Rose.
Officer Patrick Porter walked in the back door and continued into the living room.
“The sheriff will be on his way after he gets a hold of Dr. Goldblum,” officer Porter said.
“Okay, so we all just hang around here until then,” officer Dunn said.
“So what’s going to happen now?” Rose asked.
“Well, the forensics team will come and finish digging up the body and document everything to build a case,” officer Dunn looked at Rose.
“So they should be able to prove if my grandmother did this?” Rose sat down on the sofa.
“Something like that,” officer Porter spoke up.
Ten minutes passed by and sheriff Miller pulled into the driveway in his police-authorized black Dodge Charger He was a large, 6’2” man with a stocky build. He had some curly dark hair protruding from the brim of a black cowboy hat. He walked up the front steps and officer Dunn greeted him at the door.
“Good afternoon sheriff,” officer Dunn pushed open the screen door.
“Hello,” he walked inside.
Officer Dunn introduced Rose and Josh to sheriff Miller and then took him down into the basement. He looked into the hole and around the partially uncovered body.
“Dr. Goldblum and her team will be here in a while,” sheriff Miller looked around.
The sheriff turned and walked back upstairs with officers Dunn and Porter following him.
“Take down their statements if you haven’t already and report back to me what the forensic team finds out,” sheriff Miller said as he walked to the front door.
The sheriff walked out the front door, got into his car, and left.
Officers Dunn and Porter walked into the living room by Rose and Josh.
“Boy, he doesn’t stick around very long does he?” Rose said.
“He’s a busy man,” officer Dunn looked at Rose.
