One cool autumn evening Sam wanted to break off the affair that he was having with his secretary Melissa. He asked her to meet him at her favorite spot, “the overlook”, where the two of them met a year ago. Sam knew that Melissa had become too needy of him so he had to end it as soon as possible.
The overlook was a tourist spot up in the mountains where people could view the gorgeous vast of trees below. Some people hiked the landscape while other's just enjoyed it from afar. Sam thought that if he ended their relationship up there, that she might handle it better.
Melissa arrived at the overlook first after she told her abusive husband that they were through. She went to meet Sam there with the hope that he was now going to propose to her. Melissa parked and stayed in her car and waited until Sam arrived. It wasn't long before the last couple of people left and Sam pulled into the parking spot right next to her.
Melissa got out of her car with a big smile on her face, “well, I left him,” she said.
Sam was stunned by what he heard as he walked over to her, “um, what do you mean?”
Melissa embraced Sam and said it again, “I left Bill for you.”
“Oh?”
Sam wasn't sure now how he was going to tell her as he gently held Melissa in his arms. Melissa then looked at Sam and saw a blank stare on his face.
“What’s the matter Sam? Didn’t you hear me?”
Sam cracked a small smile, “yes, I heard you. But I have something I want to say to you.”
“What is it Sam? We can be together now,” Melissa smiled.
Sam walked up to the overlook and looked out. In his head he was trying to put together the right words to say. Melissa walked up alongside him and clutched his hand.
“Remember when we met? You said that I was the most beautiful woman you have ever laid eyes on. And I didn’t know if I should fall for that line, but then you asked me if I wanted to work for you. I didn’t know what to think at first,” Melissa said.
Sam turned and looked at her, “Melissa, you are beautiful and you are a great secretary… But, I don’t want to date you anymore.”
“Sam, yes I’ll marry you,” Melissa said and then hugged him again.
Sam grabbed her by the arms and pushed her back, “Melissa, no, I don’t want to marry you and I don’t want to date you anymore.”
Melissa’s smile disappeared, “what are you saying? I left my husband tonight for you.”
“I didn’t ask you to do that. Although you might be better off.”
“But Sam, I love you, please don’t do this. We have a great relationship so why not take it further,” Melissa said and then tried to kiss him.
Sam turned his head and stepped away from her, and Melissa started to cry.
Melissa felt that her whole life now was over. She thought for a moment, looked at the back of Sam’s head, and then turned and climbed up onto the rock wall. The half wall there was made as a railing to keep people safe from the edge of the cliff. Sam heard Melissa behind him and quickly turned around.
“Melissa, what are you doing? Get down from there.”
Melissa cried and said, “I have nothing now. Without you my life is over,”
Sam held still but then one small step at a time, he walked over to her, “Melissa, please don’t do this. You have a lot going for you. You can still work for me.”
Melissa looked down into the dark trees and said, “I can’t do that. Seeing you everyday and not being able to be with you would be too hard.”
Melissa cried even harder and almost lost her balance. Sam took the opportunity and rushed to grab her arm.
“Let go of me. I want to die,” Melissa said.
“No, I won’t let you.”
Melissa tried to get Sam’s hand off of her arm but as she struggled, the small pebbles under her feet let loose. Melissa screamed and slipped off the rock wall. She dangled down and Sam tried to hold onto her.
“Sam, please help me,” Melissa cried.
Sam tried to get a better grip on her arm with his other hand too but she wiggled to much.
“Give me your other hand,” Sam yelled.
“I can’t,” Melissa cried.
“Reach for me,” Sam yelled.
Melissa tried to reach but couldn’t. Sam’s grip on her arm and hand started to weaken.
“I love you Sam,” Melissa said as she felt herself slipping from his grasp.
Sam tried to hold onto her but couldn’t any longer. Melissa screamed again when she realized that she was falling.
“Noo,” Sam yelled.
The night was so quiet that Sam could hear Melissa hit a couple of tree tops on the way down and then the final thud. He turned away and looked toward the road. He was unsure what he was going to do now. Sam paused for a minute or two. If I call the police, I’m sure they will try and pin this on me… But she could still be alive down there too, Sam thought.
Sam noticed headlights on the road and quickly got into his car. The other car pulled into the parking area next to Melissa’s car. I know, I’ll wait a day and then report her missing, Sam thought. He started his car and carefully backed up. The other couple didn’t even bother to look in his direction. Sam felt somewhat relieved that they didn’t take interest in him.
The rest of the night Sam tried to get some sleep but couldn’t. He was worried and curious if Melissa survived. When morning came he did his usual routine and headed into work. After he was at work for about an hour, he asked one of the ladies who work in his section if she had seen Melissa.
“No sir, I haven’t,” the lady said.
Sam of course knew where Melissa was but wanted to plant the seed. A couple of other workers thought that it was odd that Melissa was a no call and no show. That was unlike her they thought.
Later that night while Sam was home making his dinner, he heard a sound out in his backyard. He flipped on the patio light and walked out there.
“Hello?” Sam glanced around, “if anyone is out here, you better leave before I call the police.”
Sam looked around and waited for about a minute. He didn’t see or hear anything so he turned around and went back inside. Probably just the wind, he thought. Sam stood by the kitchen counter and chopped some peppers to add to his sizzling steak. A few minutes had passed when he heard a rapping on his patio door.
“Who would be visiting my back door at this time of night,” Sam said as set the knife down.
As he walked over to the door and flipped the patio light back on, he didn’t see anyone. He opened the door and stepped outside again. Out from the shadows limped a badly beaten up Melissa.
“Melissa, you’re alive,” Sam said.
When Melissa walked closer to Sam and into the brighter light, he stepped back with fear. Sam could tell that Melissa wasn’t really alive. She was missing an eyeball and she had dried blood all over her. Sam ran back into the house, closed and locked the door.
Melissa was slow but forceful as she stopped and banged on the sliding glass door, “let me in my love.”
Sam was befuddled by this, “This has to be a dream.”
Melissa hard pounding eventually broke the glass and she made her way into the house. Sam ran over to the counter and grabbed the knife that he was using.
“Stay away from me,” Sam yelled.
“But Sam, I love you. Let’s get married,” Melissa said as she limped toward him.
“No, you’re not real,” Sam shook his head and backed away.
Melissa cornered Sam and knocked the knife out of his hand. Her unexpected strength over powered him and his neck was soon within her grasp.
“We will be together now,” she said as she slowly squeezed the life out of him.
The End
Oh how eerie !
