Teacher’s prepared for the holiday break by slowing down the load of homework. The students were happy because of the extra three days off coming next week. Ollie was happy too because his grandmother was coming for a visit. He learned a few years back that his grandmother always brought presents along with her. This year, since they moved to a new town, Ollie’s grandmother made plans to spend two weeks with them. Ollie was very happy about that.
When the bell rang at the end of the day, Ollie left the school building and headed for home. Ollie hasn’t made any friends yet at this new school so the quicker he got home, the happier he was. On his way home though, he would pass the towns animal shelter. He would occasionally see a few dogs romping around in the small yard next to it. Ollie would then stop and watch the dogs, but for only a few minutes. I wish that I could have a dog or a cat to play with, Ollie thought.
When Ollie got near his house, he saw his grandmothers car in the driveway. He quickly ran into the house and into the living room.
“Grammy,” Ollie tossed his backpack down onto the floor and ran over to her.
“Ollie, I have missed you,” his grandmother hugged him.
“I’ve missed you too Grammy. I’m so happy that you are here.”
Ollie stepped back after his grandmother released her hug and asked, “Grandma, do you want to see my new room?”
“I would love to but don’t you want your present first?” His grandmother smiled.
“Oh Grammy you didn’t have to bring me anything, but okay,” Ollie said with a big smile.
“Come here Ollie, sit by your Grammy.”
When Ollie sat down next to his grandmother, his mother, Janice walked into the kitchen. While Ollie asked his grandmother how she had been, Janice walked back into the room with his present.
“Ollie, I want you to meet Granger,” his grandmother said.
Ollie couldn’t believe his eyes, “a cat for me?”
“Yes Ollie, he’s yours,” his grandmother said.
“Oh thank you Grammy. Thank you Mom,” Ollie said as he got up and carefully pet Granger on the back of his neck.
“I know that you will be the best of friends,” his grandmother said.
“Oh yes we will,” Ollie slowly took Granger from his mothers arms.
Ollie gently hugged Granger and then gave him a small kiss on the top of his head. As he cradled Granger, Granger looked up Ollie and started to purr.
“He sure is a handsome cat,” Ollie’s mother said.
“Yes he is. Aren’t you boy?” Ollie kissed Granger on the head again.
“But Mom, what is he going to eat?” Ollie asked.
“His food is in the kitchen Ollie. We took care of everything,” his mother said.
“Yes dear, we had this all planned ahead of time,” his grandmother said.
“Thank you so much. I love him.”
Granger stretched his neck up and gave Ollie a couple of licks on the underside of his chin.
Ollie giggled, “his tongue is so scratchy.”
“Yes, a cat’s tongue is a little rough, but it’s so that he can groom himself real good,” his grandmother said.
Ollie put Granger down on the floor and watched him sniff the carpet. His mother told Ollie that he is responsible for cleaning Grangers litter box and feeding him.
“I promise to take good care of him,” Ollie hugged his mom and then his grandmother.
“I know you will dear. You’re at the age now where you should have some more responsibility,” his mother said.
Ollie sat down on the floor near the coffee table and called Granger over to him, “come here boy. Come here Granger.”
Granger continued to sniff around the floor but then trotted over to Ollie. An instant friendship had happened between those two, and Janice and her mother were very pleased to see it. Granger rubbed up against Ollie’s arm and then plopped down on the carpet in front of him. Ollie gently caressed the soft orange fur on Grangers side as he stretched out in front of him. Seeing a boy and his cat connect was a pleasure for his mom and grandmother.

This story is really good ! I love how Ollie and Granger bonded right away. Also the bond between Ollie, his mom and Grammy is great and loving.
