Jolene, a sixteen year old and her parents Bill and Julie were on an over night flight for a trip to New York. They left from their home in California around ten that evening and hoped for a peaceful flight. Their plan was to spend Halloween week at Julie’s uncles place in the country. He usually set up some fun Halloween festivities for his community to enjoy.
After the three of them ate the dinner that was supplied on the plane, Jolene’s parents tried to get some sleep. Jolene of course wasn’t able to fall asleep that easily so she first flipped through one of the magazines that she brought with her. After that she put her earbud's in and turned on some of her music. Jolene laid her head back on the headrest and closed her eyes for a few minutes. The plane had about two hundred passengers on board but it was fairly quiet.
Julie woke up once and checked on her daughter. She saw that Jolene was resting so she went back to sleep. It was now around midnight and Jolene opened up her eyes. She blinked a few times and then wondered if what she was seeing was real. When she realized that the ghostly figure in the isle was really there, she nudged her dad’s arm.
Bill was startled awake by the nudging of Jolene’s elbow, “what is it sweetie?” He whispered.
Jolene stared straight ahead and pointed, “is that what I think that is?” She whispered.
Bill looked at the figure that floated in the isle about ten feet away from them. He noticed that the ghostly figure seemed female and was dressed like a flight attendant from the fifties.
“It’s alright, I don’t think that it will harm us,” Bill said to his daughter.
“But dad, that’s a ghost.”
All of a sudden, a woman three rows behind them screamed. This woke up the rest of the sleeping passengers, and the closest flight attendant jumped up and rushed in to see what was wrong.
“There was a ghost right there,” the lady cried.
The ghost disappeared right after the lady screamed. The flight attendant tried to calm the lady and offered her a drink.
“You did see that, right dad?” Jolene asked him.
“Yes, I think I did.”
“What is going on?” Julie softly asked Bill.
“There is a ghost on the plane,” Bill whispered to Julie.
“What? A ghost? You’re kidding.”
Bill smiled and shook his head, “Jolene and I both saw it.”
The other flight attendant then walked to the front of the passengers and asked for everyone’s attention. She told the passengers that everything was alright and not to be alarmed. She shared the story of the ghostly figure that occasionally visits their airplanes. She explained that in the 1950’s an airplane with about sixty people on board crashed in the vicinity of where they flew over. The flight attendant explained that sometimes a spirit from that crash will visit them briefly but there was nothing to worry about.
Julie leaned forward, “are you alright Jolene?”
Jolene nodded and then told her mom that at first she was scared, but now she thinks it’s pretty cool. Julie smiled at her daughter and then sat back in her seat. Bill whispered to Julie and told her that the vibe that he felt when he looked at the ghost was real horror. He didn’t know how to explain it, but the feeling he said didn’t feel good at all.
“I’m sure everything will be fine. We’ll be in New York in a few hours,” Julie said.
Bill nodded his head and smiled at Julie before he turned to look at Jolene. He saw that Jolene glanced around the plane and asked if she needed something.
“No, I was just looking for that ghost,” she said.
“I don’t think that we'll see anymore ghosts on this trip,” her dad said.
Jolene smirked and then looked behind them to see if the lady who screamed was alright. The man sitting next to the her was whispering something in her ear. Jolene told her dad that she was going to use the bathroom and then got up. She decided to use the bathroom stall in the back of the plane this time. The flight attendant asked Jolene if she was alright.
“Yes, I'm just going to use the facilities,” she said.
The flight attendant then smiled and let her pass by. Jolene was in the bathroom maybe five minutes when she heard a strange sound. She wiped her wet hands off and then opened up the door. The lights of the cabin flickered and she felt cold air suddenly rush around her. Jolene shivered as she walked towards her seat. Some of the passengers were sleeping again but Jolene’s dad was wide awake.
“Dad, what’s wrong?” Jolene asked as she saw fear in her dad’s face.
Her dad pointed and said, “hurry,”
Jolene turned to look and screamed when she saw this tall ghostly figure of a man wielding a musket rifle. She ran to her seat and held onto her dad’s arm.
Once again most of the passengers awoke. This time they saw the ghost as it slowly moved up the isle. The ghost looked as if he was a soldier dressed for war from the early 1800’s. The flight attendant stopped what she was doing and watched to see what the ghost was going to do. He lifted his musket and took aim. Some of the female passengers screamed for fear of being shot.
“It’s okay, I don’t think that he can hurt us,” the flight attendant said.
Bill held Jolene’s hand and tried to comfort her. Julie sat there and was stunned by what she was witnessing. The soldier suddenly jerked as if he shot his rifle but no sound was heard. Many of the passengers sat still and watched as the ghost moved past them. The flight attendant from the first class walked in to see what was going on and saw the ghost coming towards her. She stepped to the side and let the ghost pass her. And just before it entered the first class section of the plane, the ghost disappeared.
The co-pilot paged the flight attendants and asked about the disturbance. The first class attendant quickly responded to the co-pilot and told him that everything was fine.
“We just had another visit from a ghost. A solider from the early 1800’s,” the flight attendant said.
The co-pilot repeated what the attendant said. The pilot looked at him with surprise.
“That’s a new one for us,” the pilot said.
The rest of the flight was quiet but the passengers didn’t sleep much after that visit. Most of them weren’t sure what to expect next on this flight. Jolene was happy when they finally reached the New York airport. The first ghost she didn’t mind, but the second one was a bit scarier for her. Halloween or not, a ghost wielding a weapon can bring fear to anyone.
The End.
