white two story farm house

Samantha packed her suitcase, grabbed a garbage bag full of dirty clothes, and left the apartment. She was fed up with her mother's unfair rules. Samantha thought that her older boyfriend would let her move in with him, but she thought wrong. When she knocked on his apartment door, an older woman answered it.

“Hi, can I help you?” The woman asked.

Samantha tried to look past her, “um, is Derry here?”

“Yes, what do you want Derry for?”

“Um, can I talk to him please?”

“I'm his girlfriend, what is this about?” She looked at Samantha's suitcase.

Samantha's face went white, “his girlfriend?”

“Yes, his girlfriend.”

Samantha backed up and then turned around. She quickly walked back to the elevator. The tears in her eyes started to well up as she stepped inside and waited for the door to close.

“I can’t believe this, I should have known,” Samantha plopped down onto the elevator floor and cried.

When the elevator landed on the ground floor and the door opened, Samantha was startled by a man standing there looking at her. She quickly wiped her eyes, got up from the floor and grabbed her stuff. As she hurried past the man, he asked her if she was alright. Tears ran down Samantha’s face again as she replied no and kept walking. The well dressed man stopped for a moment and then rushed to catch up to her.

“Miss, do you need some help?” The man asked her.

Feeling heartbroken and confused, Samantha stopped in the middle of the lobby and dropped her stuff, “I don’t know what to do. I left home and wanted to move in with my boyfriend, only to find out that he has another girlfriend,”

Samantha sobbed even harder so the nice man put his one hand on her shoulder and handed her his handkerchief. Samantha took his handkerchief and blew her nose.

“You know that I can’t go on with my day until I know that you will be alright. My name is William Truman, would you like to go to my house and rest for awhile?”

Samantha looked at William, “you would do that for me?”

“Of course I would. I don’t like to see any women in distress.”

Samantha sniffled and asked, “do you live alone?”

“Yes I do, so you will have a room all to yourself,” William said and smiled.

Samantha wiped some of her tears away with her sleeve and then blew her nose again. She stuffed William’s handkerchief into her jean pocket and picked up her bag of dirty clothes.

“Okay, I’ll stay with you for a little while,” Samantha said with a soft smile.

William picked up her suitcase and smiled, “okay, my car is in the parking garage across the street.

The two of them left the apartment building and headed towards William’s car. Samantha was surprised when she saw that William drove a Mercedes.

“Wow, what a nice car,” She said.

“Thank you, it’s five years old but I take good care of it,” William said as he put her suitcase in the trunk and closed it.

Samantha climbed into the front passenger side of the car and glanced around. William got in the driver side, smiled at her and then started the car. While he drove them out of the city, he let Samantha do most of the talking. She went on and on about how her mother is never around because she is always working. And the fact that she is eighteen years old now and her mother still treats her like a little kid. Samantha then switched her rant to the guy she had been dating off and on for about a year.

“Derry never treated me like a kid but I should have picked up on it when he never invited me over to his place,” Samantha said.

Samantha stopped talking and was quiet for a minute. William glanced at her a couple of times and then she finally spoke again.

“I’m sorry, I never did tell you my name. I’m Samantha Cox. I just graduated high school and I have big plans to become a fashion model.”

“It’s nice to meet you Samantha Cox,” William smiled at her, “I thought that with your great looks that you were already a model.”
