In the morning after a restful night, most of the fairy community started their day in their usual way. Only this morning Niko, the head of security, decided to go out to the edge of the forest with the two seekers. He wanted to see everything that had been going on for himself. Niko explained to Drew the night before that if he has to make a serious decision about the community’s home, that he wants a full understanding of the changes going on.
Tia and Pa were the first ones up in their family. Tia helped her little sister Olivia get ready for the day while Jack got himself up and going. Ma then stretched and yawned as she walked into the kitchen area to put together the breakfast.
Pa was sitting at their table waiting and said, “good morning Ma, why do you seem so tired this morning?”
“Good morning Pa… I guess I didn’t sleep very well last night,” she said.
Before Pa could ask her what was on her mind, Tia and Olivia walked into the room.
“I would like some strawberries today please,” Olivia sat down at the table.
“Strawberries it is,” Ma said and smiled.
Tia helped Ma gather up some strawberries, blueberries, and some dandelions from the storage bins. Ma then carried a large bowl of water to the table for them to drink from.
“Jack, breakfast is on the table,” Tia called out.
Only a few minutes passed before Jack was also sitting down at the table. While the kids ate, Ma noticed that Pa was very quiet and not eating much this morning. This whole destruction of the forest thing has got them both worried. Ma tried to take Pa’s mind off of their trouble’s by asking him about his plans for the crops this spring.
“Drew had watermelon last year which was good. What do you think about adding that to the field?” Ma asked.
“Yeah Pa, are you going to plant watermelon this time?” Jack asked him.
“Watermelon? Yes, I suppose that we could have watermelon this year,” Pa smiled.
Pa winked and smiled at Ma. He knew that he had to change his thinking to something more productive. When Tia and her siblings were done eating, she coaxed them to get going to school. Tia knew that what she had planned for lessons today would probably take a while. Her plan was to collect various foliage throughout the forest so that just in case the community had to move, that they would have some memorabilia. Of course she didn’t plan on telling her students the real reason for the collecting.
When Pa was done with his breakfast, he headed out to his fields. He stopped at Drew’s place on the way and chatted with him for a few minutes.
“Yeah, Niko went with the seekers this morning. He said that he was going to camp as close to the human work site as possible. He told me that he wants to hear the humans plans for the forest, not just observe them,” Drew said.
“Well, that makes sense to me but I sure hope that he’s careful,” Pa said.
“Yeah me too.”
