Bright and early the next morning, Rum and Nock agreed on a nice area where the new village could be built. After their dandelion breakfast, they started on the journey back home. They couldn’t wait to tell Coss and all the others about how beautiful the forest is.
Niko, Turk, and Loto got up early as well and decided to fly over the construction site before they headed for home. They saw some humans standing and looking at the burnt remains of the buildings. Niko heard one man say that they don’t understand who would do such a thing. All their hard work was now gone in an instant. Niko knew how he felt since humans have destroyed some of their village from time to time.
“We should fly down and attack those humans,” Turk said as he fluttered above Niko.
“No, we’ve done enough. I think this attack on their buildings was enough for now,” Niko said. “Now, let’s go home.”
Turk, Loto, and Niko turned and headed back toward the river.
“We might as well do some fishing while we are here, don’t you think?” Loto said.
“Yeah, that would be a good cover for where we’ve been,” Niko said.
So, the three of them spent part of the morning catching fish for a meal when they got back to the village.
Pa ate his breakfast and wondered what Niko and his pals did over night. Where their village is located in the forest hides much of the noise from outside of the forest. So, their community didn’t hear the sirens from the fire trucks last night. But when Drew walked out of his hut, he could smell a hint of smoke in the air. Drew felt panicked so he ran to a small clearing on his land and flew up to look around. He scanned the forest around the village but didn’t see anything burning. Maybe a human had a campfire somewhere, he thought.
Drew slowly fluttered back down to the ground and then didn’t think much more about it. He gathered some melons and went back to his hut where Fiona and Bo were eating their breakfast.
Pa finished his breakfast and could no longer fight this bad feeling that he was having, “I’ll see you all later. I need to talk to Drew about something,”
“Pa, does this have anything to do with Niko and his friends?” Tia asked.
“Yes, but don’t worry about it. You just go and teach your class,” Pa winked and smiled at Tia.
Ma winked at Pa as he smiled at her too before he left the hut. When Pa stepped outside, he smelled a hint of smoke, like from smoldering wood. He walked over to Drew’s place and knocked on the door. Drew called out to come in, so Pa did.
