From a young age, Dack the dragon knew that he was different. He didn’t like to do what the other dragon’s did, such as hunting antelope and scaring humans. Instead, Dack liked to have fun and spread joy all around. When it was the Christmas season, Dack was very happy because he wasn’t picked on nearly as much. See, during this time of year, everyone, even the dragon’s were a little kinder.
Now, it was the day before Christmas and the humans were stirring. They were hustling and hurrying to get all of their shopping done. But during their coffee stops and rushing around, little Joey Newbaum suddenly went missing. While his mother was talking with an old friend from school, Joey wandered off. Now, little Joey was only four years old but he loved the snow. And with Christmas almost here, it hadn’t yet snowed. But what Joey saw that made him go running, was some big fluffy flakes of sparkly snow falling.
Just down the street was a snow making machine owned by a local businessman. Little Joey was so mesmerized by the falling snow that he didn’t even realize how far he had run from his mother. The sidewalk was full of passerby’s but none of them paid attention to the little boy. When the snow machine shut off for a moment to cool, the snow stopped falling. Joey looked around with the wonder of why and waited for only a minute. When the snow melted and no longer fell, Joey left the area. The only thing was, he had forgotten which direction he had come from, and could no longer see his mother.
About ten minutes passed and Joey’s mother Sarah realized that he wasn’t by her side. With fear and heartache she looked around and cried. Without any other thought, her friend took her into the coffee shop. She sat Sarah down and had the police called. While they waited, Joey had wandered even further away. He walked and walked, and turned down side streets. No one had seen him, those who were looking anyway. As the afternoon got colder, the first snow fall did fly. It was joyous for some but made Sarah cry. She feared for her Joey out in the cold. She needed some comfort and someone to hold.
On the outskirts of town was the road to the mountains. When Joey got to that point, he knew that he was lost. He stopped and looked, and turned to the right. A short cut maybe through the field of white? Joey was happy to see all the snow, but feeling a bit nervous out in the cold. He shivered a little but moved on ahead. Joey wished right now that he had his own sled.
Up on the mountain near a steep cliff side was Dack the dragon coming out from his hide. He stretched his back and yawned a big yawn. He had been napping since the crack of dawn. Dack looked down the slope and saw a little spec. A spec that he knew wasn’t there before, what the heck? He watched the spec and saw that it moved. This made him curious so he knew what to do. Dack jump in the air and glided down. As he got closer, he was stunned by what he had found. A tiny shivering human and he was all alone.
This human shouldn’t be here, Dack thought to himself. My sibling’s would eat him without any doubt. Dack flew around Joey and extended his claws. Carefully he grabbed him by the seat of his drawers. Joey screamed only once as they flew over the ground. It wouldn’t be long before they reached the small town.
“It’s okay little human, I’m taking you home,”
Joey looked up at the dragon and suddenly felt calm. The gentle smile on Dacks dragon face brought joy to his frown. Dack had to be careful though with human interaction. For fear of war and their extinction. Dack saw a park in the center of town, it seemed very quiet and no one around. He carefully landed near one of the trees and set Joey down before needing to sneeze. Dack’s sneeze shook the ground and rattled the trees but Joey smiled and got up from his knees.
“Bless you sir and thank you for bringing me home,” Joey said.
Dack shook his head, “you are very welcome little human. You have to be careful when adventuring out of town though. There are scary things out there that might not hurt you.”
“But you did hurt me,” Joey said.
“No I didn’t, but other’s might. Do you know where you live from here?” Dack asked him.
All of a sudden, Dack heard a few of human voices coming closer to them.
“I must go little human,” Dack said.
“My name is Joey,” he smiled.
Dack smiled back, “I’m Dack. Take care little Joey and have a Merry Christmas.”
Dack quickly jumped, and flew straight up and out of sight. Joey stared up at the sky while some of the people from the search team saw him and ran over.
“Joey… Boy, are we happy to see you. Your mother is going to be so happy too. Where have you been?”
“I was lost but Dack brought me home. He’s a Christmas dragon,” Joey said.
“A Christmas Dragon?” “Oh boy, the stories that kids make up these days,” the police officer said.
