I walked along the side of the road right next to a field full of corn. As the sun set I couldn’t help but think of what might lurk within the never ending field. I heard an occasional caw of a crow and the start of chirping crickets. The road itself was lightly traveled so I didn’t expect to see much traffic. As peaceful as the walk might seem, it was also a little spooky. The rustling sound here and there of possible critters moving. Was I alone out on this country road or was there someone or something out there watching me?
As I continued to venture down the road, a passing car did honk. I waved in order to be courteous, but didn’t know who they were. The sky was now a darker grey as nighttime started to fall. The light I shined was on my keychain, with the keys to my broken down car. It barely lit the path in front of me as I stumbled over a stone. One turn of my ankle and I’d go down, if it was the one that I once broke. I’d hate to be stranded out here for sure, if I wasn’t able to walk. So I kept moving and hoped for the best, that maybe someone would stop.
The air had cooled some and a slight breeze was blowing. My journey continued but I really didn’t know where I am going. The town I passed was miles away as day turned into night. If only I brought my cellphone with me, I could call someone for a ride. The time continued but felt like it stopped, as I walked this lonely road. A night I prayed would come to an end, or at least see some light.
The breeze picked up and the cornstalks waved, a sound that was a tad bit scary. I walked a little faster but knew it didn’t matter, because it was still a long way to Derry. I slowed back down to conserve my energy, and the wind slowed back to a breeze. If I survive this night I thought, God, you will have me on my knees.
I got to a point where I needed to rest but didn’t know where to go. The only thing around me now was corn, dirt, and road. I looked around with my mini light and decided where to sit. I picked the road if only for a few minutes because I knew that I wouldn’t get hit. I sat and looked up at the dark black sky, some stars peeked through with a light so shy. It was peaceful and quiet but still somewhat spooky, as I sat alone in the dark.
Five minutes might have passed so I needed to get up. It was time to get moving again. I could only hope that the new day would come, to shed light on this lonely road. A sudden sound came from deep in the field, a sound that I hadn’t heard before. A rumble, a clank, and a sudden whoosh. What was that, I thought. Then it hit me ever so slightly, a sprinkle. Do they water in the middle of the night or is it close to morning, I wondered.
As I walked along I started to sing, my hopes of daylight soon would bring. I never thought a night would be, so long, so boring, and even scary. I stopped and listened, did I just here a bird, I thought. Maybe, as I continued down the road. Another sound hit my ears, I turned to look and see. Headlights coming from afar, could this be a ride for me?
Daylight cracks ever so slightly as a pickup truck comes near. I wave my arms and lit-up light in hope they see me here. Hours walking through unknown land, guides me to an open hand when the pickup truck pulled over. With a smiling face and a welcomed grin, I knew that my night walk was over.
